François Portais

François Portais is an independent visual artist whose work explores recurring themes of seascape, landscape and the human figure. His paintings move between the visible world and inner experience. Dark, layered surfaces, shifting water and strong contrasts of light give his landscapes a psychological intensity. At the heart of his work is an exploration of perception, presence and what resists direct representation. From 1990 to 1994, he studied at the Ruudt Wackers Academy in Amsterdam.
