François Portais is an independent visual artist. In his recent paintings, atmospheric landscapes and seascapes occupy a central place, alongside portraits and the human figure. Through layered fields of colour and the interplay of light and darkness, he creates images that move between the recognisable and the elusive. His paintings evoke a reality in which the visible world loses something of its familiar certainty. The power of his work lies not so much in what it depicts as in what it evokes. His paintings have an immediate, sensory impact that resists complete explanation. Rather than demanding understanding, they invite a more attentive way of looking, one in which meaning is sensed rather than defined. Equally striking is the particular relationship his work has with time. His landscapes often seem to exist outside any recognisable historical context. They do not refer to a specific place or event, but touch upon something more fundamental: a primordial experience of the world, before it has been ordered through images or language. Like the moment when daylight fades, familiar forms lose their certainty, and something unknown begins to emerge from the gathering dusk. There is an almost mythical quality to his work. Not because the paintings tell a story or depict an established symbolism, but precisely because they recall a myth whose narrative has been lost. All that remains are the images: enigmatic yet strangely familiar, as though they refer to something we once knew but can no longer put into words. His paintings move between the visible world and inner experience. Dark, layered surfaces, shifting water and strong contrasts of light give his landscapes a psychological intensity. At the heart of his work is an exploration of perception, presence and what resists direct representation. From 1990 to 1994, he studied at the Ruudt Wackers Academy in Amsterdam.
